A local franchise authority (LFA) is a United States local government organization that, together with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), regulates cable television service within the local government's area. Many manufacturers of personal computers and laptops consider parallel to be a legacy port and no longer include the parallel interface. USB-to-EPP chips can also allow other non-printer devices to continue to work on modern computers without a parallel port. Dataproducts introduced a very different implementation of the parallel interface for their printers. USB-to-parallel adapters are available that can make parallel-only printers work with USB-only systems. Printers also eventually took up the bi-directional system, allowing various status report information to be sent. Such a computer may also be a gateway allowing a general-purpose computer (like a laptop) to communicate over a USB or Ethernet port to the devices on a CAN bus. One early use of the parallel port was for dongles used as hardware keys which were supplied with application software as a form of software copy protection. It needs a plan B, dare I use the cliché.
